Most guests come to Gdańsk for the gables and the amber, and quite right. But north-west of the centre, where the city meets the Baltic, there is another Gdańsk entirely: Brzeźno, the seaside — a long sweep of sandy beach backed by a promenade and shorefront parkland, under the wide northern light.

The ritual is simple. Go before lunch — better still, before the city properly wakes. Walk the wooden pier out into the Gulf of Gdańsk for the sea air and the long view, then take the shore path in either direction and turn back whenever you like. In an hour you will have had more horizon than most city breaks offer in a week.
Getting there is part of the pleasure: the tram from the centre trades brick for sea light in the space of a short ride, and the historic Old Town is exactly where you left it when you come back inland.
