The Motława is Gdańsk's old working river, and its banks are the city's loveliest address. Across a footbridge from the Long Market lies Granary Island (Wyspa Spichrzów), a sliver of land between the old and new arms of the river that was, for centuries, the city's warehouse. Almost entirely destroyed in 1945, it was raised again in a careful 21st-century rebuild that echoes the steep-roofed granary forms while opening the waterfront back to the city — the calmer, contemporary face of the Old Town, the same river views and Crane silhouette with a little more room to breathe.
